Today is Winter Solstice, the mark of the shortest day of the year, where the Northern Hemisphere gets the least amount of exposure to the sun. While we no longer need to wait for this faraway day in the hopes of enjoying our merry fermented beer and wine, nor do we need to slaughter our cattle for fear of not having enough food to get them through the cold winter days (thank goodness!), we can use this day and the energy (because everything is made of energy (the device you are reading this from to the thoughts in your mind) from it to reflect on life and set intentions for the New Year that bear fruit as days get longer and Spring approaches. While walking our newly created labrynth after sadhana (a spiritual practice of yoga and meditation) this morning with a few of my yogi friends, I listened as an owl sang to us and watched as the moon and a few stars flickered at us and retreated so the sun could start to shine its way through the dense clouds. My heart flooded with gratitude for the ability to wake up, share a practice with anyone who wants to attend, a practice that resets my body, mind and soul daily. I drank in the sounds of the owl and said hello to him, I felt the cold and damp ground push in between my toes, I listened as the other yogis walked along their chosen path. We ended our practice by singing The Long Time Sun, a Kundalini Yoga farewell blessing and I prayed for all of the people who are not safe in their own homes, who are being evacuated by the thousands, even millions across the globe for fear of death or violence. I prayed that they be able, one day, to have even a glimpse of what we had this morning. Winter Solstice and the Holiday Season is a time to dump and refill your cup. Rid yourself of the crud you have been lugging around that makes you feel heavy and to refill your cup so you can live the highest expression of your life (whatever that may be). The sun is said to represent our soul and like the earth orbits the sun, we orbit our soul, evolving (hopefully) in consciousness as we grow older. This season is a preparation for renewed life, experiences and projects. A time for hibernation, relaxation and germination. It is a time when we can choose to relinquish materialism and our ego. Numerologically it a 9 (2+0+1+6=9), which makes 2017 a 1. This means that the energy behind this year is even more powerful to drop the cycles that deplete you and to embark upon habits that enliven, inspire and motivate you. How do we accomplish this? Well, 1) let's make it through the holidays first. 2) Have patience with those you love who trigger you. 3) Hold onto the real reason we celebrate this time of year and be grateful for your blessings. 4) Create a list of those things you want to relinquish in life. 5) Create a list of those things you want to create in your life. 6) Just DO IT! No one else but yourself can create the life you dream of so strap on your GO GET EM shoes and let's RUN WITH LIFE! Need more inspiration than that?
